Task 2 essay

The manufacturing and use of cars damages the environment but their popularity is increasing. Why is this happening? How could this be controlled?

Excessive usage of cars has a detrimental effect on our environment. Yet, more cars are being manufactured nowadays than before. The reason behind the usage of personal cars is affordability and accessibility. This can be controlled by increasing tariffs on personal vehicles. Another possible solution is investing in hybrid or electric cars.

Owing to mass production, buying a car is now financially feasible. Moreover, the annual growth in GDP has increased the buying capacity of an individual. In addition to that, the accessibility of personal vehicles to almost everywhere has enabled people to be willing to invest in buying cars. Hence, a personal car is preferred as compared to local transport that is time-consuming.

Introducing high tariffs on the purchase and parking of personal vehicles is a possible solution. Moreover, the annual taxes on owners of cars can also cause people to stop buying cars. Consequently, the affordability of cars will be reduced. For example, the taxes in Pakistan on cars are more than the original prices of cars, which has seriously affected the buying capacity of an individual. Consequently, fewer people have been investing in cars nowadays.

Alternatively, buying a hybrid car or electric car is also a viable option as it is more environmentally friendly compared to ordinary cars. Electric cars run completely on electricity and therefore require no fuel. This makes them energy efficient. Moreover, electric and hybrid cars have very little annual carbon emission.

To conclude, the growing demand for cars nowadays cannot be ignored. Therefore, increasing tax on ordinary cars on one hand, and producing energy-efficient cars on the other, will help tackle the environmental problem related to cars.
